Reported Speech in 3 Schritten – mit Beispielen.

1. Backshift of tenses

   In reported speech the tense usually moves one step back: present simple to past, will to would, can to could, have to had.

   'I am tired.' to She said she was tired.

2. Reported questions

   Reported questions have normal word order (no inversion). For yes/no questions use 'if' or 'whether'.

   'Where do you live?' to He asked where I lived.

3. Pronouns and time words

   Pronouns change because a different person reports the words; 'tomorrow' becomes 'the next day', 'this' becomes 'that'.

   'I will call you tomorrow.' to She said she would call me the next day.
