Modals of Deduction in 3 Schritten – mit Beispielen.
Deduction
For a confident conclusion use 'must' (sure it is true) or 'can't' (sure it is not). For possibility use 'might', 'may' or 'could'.
The light is on, so he must be home. / She can't be hungry; she just ate.Past deduction
For the past add 'have + past participle'.
He must have forgotten. / She can't have done it; she was away.Obligation
'must' = obligation, 'mustn't' = forbidden, 'don't have to' = not necessary.
You mustn't smoke here. / You don't have to come.
