Gerund vs. infinitive
Some verbs take the gerund (enjoy, avoid, admit), others the infinitive (want, decide, hope). After a preposition the verb is always -ing.
I enjoy reading. / She decided to study. / good at cooking.Participle clauses
A participle clause can shorten a longer clause and often expresses the reason or a simultaneous action.
Feeling tired, she went to bed. (= Because she felt tired ...)Past participle clauses
A past participle clause has a passive meaning.
Built in 1900, the house is old. (= It was built in 1900.)
